Chapter 11

There were a few things that could be used to measure the future success of a relationship. The way someone traveled was definitely one of them. So far Aly knew that Mack was the complete opposite of herself. Aly preferred to pack with every eventuality in mind. While Mack had arrived to pick her up to go to the airport with a very small suitcase. But where Aly was prone to getting flustered, Mack remained cool no matter what stress arose. Before they arrived at the airport Aly was convinced she lost the tickets only to find them thirty minutes later in her purse. The man in the seats in front of them insisted on leaning his seat all the way back, buckling Mack’s knees. No matter what situation arose Mack laughed it off. So far, she was one of the most pleasant traveling companions Aly had ever experienced.

Now that they were safely off the plane and on the way to the hotel Aly breathed a sigh of relief. Cora met them in the lobby. She greeted Aly with a hug and a handshake for Mack. Mack left them to go get the room keys.

“So are you engaged yet?” Aly laughed.

“Not yet. I’m taking Kate for a candlelight dinner at a fancy restaurant then proposing.”

“Well, we’ll be around when you’re ready for us,” Aly smiled. Mack returned with the room key.

“Let me walk you up,” Cora smiled. She took one of Aly’s suitcases and followed them to the elevator.

They exited the elevator and Cora smiled wide.

“Hey, we’re right next door.”

“Really?” Aly asked.

“Yeah,” Cora laughed.

“That’s kind of cool,” Aly smiled. Cora leaned in for one last hug.

“I guess this is my stop. Wish me luck,” Cora laughed.

“Good luck,” Mack said with a genuine smile.

“Good luck, friend,” Aly waved as Cora stepped inside her own room.

“How do you think it’s going to go?” Aly asked.

“Remains to be seen. But hopefully well,” Mack grinned.

Their room was on the third floor and had a perfect view of the ocean. Aly stood leaning against the railing of their balcony. Mack leaned against the doorframe.

“Come out here with me,” Aly laughed, extending her hand. Mack smiled wide but shook her head.

“Oh, no. You have fun. I feel good right here,” Mack said.

“What? Are you refusing to enjoy the view with me?” Aly asked.

“No, I’m saying that I don’t want to dangle above the ground this high.”

“Mack. There’s a concrete balcony. I would hardly call that dangling,” Aly smirked. She waved her hand at Mack emphatically. Mack arched an eyebrow still stubbornly refusing.

“Come on. I’ll keep you safe,” Aly promised.

“How are you going to keep me safe from gravity?” Mack teased.

“You don’t know what I’m capable of. Just one tiny step,” Aly pleaded.

Mack took one begrudging step and took Aly’s hand. Aly pulled Mack out the rest of the way. She could see the expression of panic on Mack’s face and hugged the woman close. Aly wrapped her arms tighter and tighter until she felt Mack relax.
